Lab testing near Boone, NC: who does it and what it costs

A lot of the lab work a High Country business or landowner might need is already priced in public, by universities and state agencies. We collected {len(ROWS)} of those prices, and every one links to the page it came from.

This is a list of lab and testing services near Boone, North Carolina, that publish their prices. They come from Appalachian State University, the state Department of Agriculture, county health departments, a community college's manufacturing centre and university labs within a few hours' drive. Each entry gives the price exactly as the provider prints it, who may buy it, and a link to the page we read it on, on 2026-11-05.

We have no arrangement with any of these providers, and nobody paid to be listed. We collected the prices while costing a research project of our own, and they seemed too useful to keep in a spreadsheet.

Soil tests: send them this month

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture tests soil for North Carolina residents for $0 a sample from 1 April to 30 November, and charges $5 a sample from 1 December to 31 March. For this season, a sample is free only if it is physically at the lab, 4300 Reedy Creek Road in Raleigh, by 5 PM on 30 November 2026. The fee depends on when it arrives there, not when you post it or drop it at the county Extension office. USPS does not deliver to that address, so allow for it. How to take a farm soil sample is below.

How to read these prices

Per hour or per sample. University instruments are usually priced by the hour; tests are priced per sample. An hour on a microscope buys time on the machine, not a finished answer.

Staff time is often extra. Several university labs add a staff rate when their people train you or run the instrument. The notes say so where the page does.

Which rate is yours. Universities publish several rates: their own researchers, other universities, and companies. We list the rate a private business would pay. Some pages offer a lower rate to companies working on government funding.

Ask before you go. Some of these labs require training before you use an instrument yourself, and one says plainly that its committee may grant or deny access. Prices change: one lab notes that its fees usually rise about 3% each July, and another that its rates may change without notice.

For farms: free and low-cost help

Several of the services in the directory are aimed at farms: the state's soil, nematode, forage and manure tests, pond and livestock water analysis, animal necropsies, and the NC State plant clinic. This section covers how to take a soil sample, where to test soil for contaminants, and the equipment, money and programmes on offer to High Country farms.

How to take a farm soil sample

These steps follow the NC Department of Agriculture's own instructions for commercial growers. Each links to the page it comes from.

  1. Get the official boxes. NCDA&CS only accepts samples in its own soil boxes, available from county Cooperative Extension offices among other places. Watauga's office is at 971 W King St, Boone. Source
  2. Use the right form. Farms larger than an acre use the commercial grower form, which gives lime and fertilizer advice per acre; an acre or less uses the homeowner form. Source
  3. Use a stainless-steel probe or a shovel and a clean plastic bucket. Brass and bronze tools add copper to the sample, and galvanised buckets add zinc. Source
  4. Split the farm into areas before you dig. Each area with its own soil type or fertilizer history gets its own sample. Stay away from fertilizer bands and the ends of fields. Source
  5. In each area, take 15 to 20 cores: 8 inches deep in plowed fields, 4 inches in pasture, hay and no-till ground. If you are chasing a problem, sample in the plants' root zone. Source
  6. Mix each area's cores in the bucket and fill one box to the red line. Label it with your name, address and a sample ID you will recognise, and give every box from the farm the same Farm ID. Source
  7. No tape on the box, no plastic bag inside it, and do not sample soil that is too wet to till. Source
  8. Give each sample a crop code from the NCDA&CS list. There are codes for pasture and hay, vegetables, berries and Christmas trees, including fir, spruce and hemlock. Source

How many samples? None of the NCDA&CS pages we read caps the number. The rule is about areas, not counts: one sample for each part of the farm with its own soil or fertilizer history, each made of 15 to 20 cores. Every sample is priced the same, so ten fields cost nothing if the boxes arrive in time, or $50 in peak season at $5 each.

Getting them there. Many county Extension offices carry samples to the lab as a courtesy, but how long that takes varies by county. The lab accepts deliveries Monday to Friday, 6 AM to 5 PM, except state holidays. The soil test measures nutrients, pH and lime need; the lab does not test soil for contaminants. Who does is below.

Testing soil for contaminants

The state's routine soil test does not look for lead, arsenic, pesticides or other contaminants. Its one heavy-metals test, $30 a sample, is only for sites permitted under the state's solid-waste rules. For everyone else:

  • Metals, in North Carolina. NC State's Environmental Analysis Laboratory lists metals in soil, such as lead, cadmium and chromium, at $16.50 a metal for outside customers. Its rate sheet is marked "For Reference Only", so ask the lab before sending anything. It is in the directory under Soil, plants and farm.
  • Metals, by mail. The UMass Amherst soil lab's Total Sorbed Metals test measures lead, nickel, copper, cadmium, chromium and zinc in soil. We did not find its current price on the page we read, so check before you send.
  • Pesticides, petroleum and other chemicals. Commercial environmental labs test for these on request, and we found none in the region that publishes a price. Duke University's Superfund community outreach team stopped keeping a list because labs change so often. Its advice is to search for the contaminant you are worried about together with "soil testing", and ask labs for a quote.
  • Before you pay for a test. Duke's Check Your Dirt NC! decision tool can help you identify possible sources of contaminants near a garden.

You may see the Cornell Soil Health Laboratory recommended for affordable metals testing. Its heavy-metal test is now offered only to New York State's community gardens program.

Testing water: wells, springs, ponds and town water

Which lab to use depends on where the water comes from and what you want to know. The prices below are in the directory under Water.

A private well or spring

In Watauga County, AppHealthCare's environmental health office sells test kits from the NC State Laboratory of Public Health: $50 for bacteria and $101 for inorganic chemicals. Kits for nitrate and nitrite ($61), and for petroleum, volatile organic compounds or each category of pesticide ($104), must be collected by a health department inspector, for an extra $75 visit. The fees are what the State Laboratory charges for the kit, plus courier shipping.

In Avery and Mitchell counties, the Toe River Health District takes applications for water analysis at its offices in Newland and Bakersville: $75 for bacteria, $125 for inorganic chemicals, or $175 for both. Bacteria results usually come back within 48 hours; other tests go to the State Laboratory and typically take about four weeks. It does not sample an unprotected or open supply.

Ponds, irrigation and livestock water

The NC Department of Agriculture's solution lab tests irrigation water, livestock and poultry drinking water and fish ponds for $10 a sample collected in North Carolina, with results in three business days. Collect it in a clean 12 oz plastic bottle, never glass, and keep it refrigerated until it reaches the lab. The lab tests nitrate, but not bacteria, pesticides, petroleum or PFAS. It says plainly that it does not test the many chemicals that matter for human drinking water.

Certified labs, for lead and more

The NC State Laboratory of Public Health certifies labs to test drinking water, one test at a time, and the state's drinking water section requires drinking water analyses to be done by a certified lab. The list is searchable: choose "View a list of all laboratories", then a lab's name to see which tests it is certified for. Three nearby labs on that list, none of which publishes prices, so ask for a quote:

  • Aqua Tech Service and Consulting, Boone: coliform and E. coli bacteria.
  • Water Quality Lab & Operations, Banner Elk: lead, copper, nitrate, nitrite, and coliform and E. coli bacteria.
  • Water Tech Laboratories, Granite Falls: lead, copper, nitrate, nitrite and hardness, among others.

Town water

Boone's 2025 drinking water quality report says the town system received no violations in 2025. If you are concerned about lead, it says to contact the Town of Boone Water Treatment Plant about testing, and it links an inventory of lead service lines. App State publishes a separate report for campus water, which records one reporting violation: organic carbon samples for a period starting 1 April 2025 were not reported on time.

Rivers and swimming holes

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, MountainTrue's Watauga Riverkeeper tests swimming spots weekly for E. coli and posts the results on Swim Guide on Fridays. When we read it on 2026-11-05, Swim Guide's page for the Boone Greenway's Casey Lane access, on the South Fork New River, said the site had met water quality standards less than 60% of the time. Its latest sample was taken on 4 September 2026. The New River Conservancy trains and recertifies volunteers every year as New River Water Watchers, who collect and report water quality data.

For furniture makers and manufacturers

The closest furniture and textile test lab we found is the Manufacturing Solutions Center in Conover, a division of Catawba Valley Community College. It publishes a price list for upholstery, fabric and flammability tests, which are in the directory under Furniture, textiles and packaging, and every order carries a $10 set-up fee per package.

One thing to check before you order. MSC's laboratory is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, but the accreditation covers particular tests: its BIFMA structural furniture tests and clothing flammability, among others. Several tests on its price list, including the California TB117-2013 and NFPA 260 upholstery tests, are not on that accredited scope. If a customer or regulator needs accredited results, ask which tests qualify.

One price stands out

Six university labs on this list publish an hourly rate for a scanning electron microscope, the kind that shows the surface of something at many thousands of times magnification. Appalachian State's is the lowest of the six.

Scanning electron microscopeRate for companies, per hour
App State, Boone$44.30
UNC-Chapel Hill$60
Virginia Tech$91
UT Knoxville$94
Duke$107.66
NC State$158

For comparison, one commercial lab in Maryland posts a standard SEM rate of $249 an hour. The rates may not buy the same thing, so check what each includes: an operator, sample preparation, images or a report. Still, if you need to look closely at a coating, a fracture, a seed or an insect, there is an instrument in Boone, subject to the facility's training and approval.

Why a business-systems firm keeps this list

We build and run the systems small businesses use to price, sell and keep records. A price you can see is a price you can plan around. Every entry carries the date we checked it, so you can tell how old our copy is before you rely on it.

What this list does not establish

It is not complete. It includes only services whose price is published online. Many labs, including most commercial ones, quote on request, so this list leans towards universities and state agencies.

We read every price on the provider's own page on 2026-11-05 and did not phone anyone. Who may buy each service is as the page states it, and some facilities decide case by case.

Nothing here compares the quality of these services, and nothing here is advice on which test you need. The Extension office, the health department or the lab itself can tell you that.

Questions people ask

How much does a soil test cost in North Carolina?

The NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services tests soil for North Carolina residents for $0 a sample from 1 April to 30 November and $5 a sample from 1 December to 31 March. For the 2026 season, samples that reach the lab in Raleigh by 5 PM on 30 November are free. An expedited test is $250.

Where can I get soil tested for lead or other contaminants in North Carolina?

Not at the NC Department of Agriculture: its soil test measures nutrients and pH, and its heavy-metals test is only for sites permitted under state solid-waste rules. NC State's Environmental Analysis Laboratory lists metals in soil, such as lead, at $16.50 a metal for outside customers, but marks the rate sheet for reference only, so ask first. The UMass Amherst soil lab tests soil for lead and other metals by mail. For pesticides or petroleum, ask commercial environmental labs for a quote.

Where can I get my well water tested in Watauga County?

AppHealthCare's environmental health office sells well water test kits from the NC State Laboratory of Public Health. As of its fee schedule effective 1 July 2026, a bacteria kit is $50 and an inorganic chemicals kit is $101, which the schedule says is what the State Laboratory charges.

Where can I get pond or livestock water tested in North Carolina?

The NC Department of Agriculture's solution analysis lab tests irrigation water, livestock and poultry drinking water and fish ponds for $10 a sample collected in North Carolina, with results in three business days. It tests nitrate but not bacteria, pesticides, petroleum or PFAS.

Can I rent a livestock scale near Boone?

We found none with a published price in Watauga, Ashe, Avery, Alleghany, Wilkes or Caldwell counties. The closest with published terms that we found is Stokes County Extension's, at $20 for up to 3 days. The Watauga Soil and Water Conservation District rents a no-till drill, a tree planter, a subsoiler and other farm equipment, mostly at $25 a day.

Can a private company use App State's electron microscope?

App State's Dewel Microscopy Facility publishes a rate of $44.30 an hour for its scanning electron microscope for state agencies, private companies and private entities. Every user must be trained, and the facility's advisory committee may grant or deny access.

How much does an hour on a scanning electron microscope cost?

Among the six university labs in this directory, the published rate for companies runs from $44.30 an hour at App State to $158 an hour at NC State. One commercial lab in Maryland posts $249 an hour. Check what each rate includes, such as staff time, sample preparation or a report.

Can I get hemp or wine tested in Boone?

Yes. App State's Fermentation Sciences service lab lists hemp cannabinoid testing at $70 an analysis, hemp terpenes at $80, and a wine panel at $95, for growers and producers. It says most results come back within 24 hours.
